Alpine iDA-X305 – Radio / digital player – Full-DIN – in-dash – 50 Watts x 4
The iDA-X305 is the worst car audio product I have ever purchased. It has a lovely display, but it is only usable if all you want to do is listen to the iPod. Sound quality was dreadful, but this may have been be a setting or installation problem. The manual and settings are in some sections largely incomprehensible. However, the main problem is that the user interface is impossible to use safely in a moving vehicle. Want to find a radio station? Select the menu. Scroll. Try to read the display. Every bump on the road means the scroll with the main jog wheel overshoots or undershoots. By this time your eyes have been off the road for too long. Even as a passenger I found the controls to be too difficult to use if the vehicle was moving. My car is a sports saloon, so this is possibly partly because of the stiff suspension, but the unit is in any event a road hazard. The jog dial is glacially slow – want to increase the volume? Be prepared to turn the wheel and turn it and turn it. Too bad if you need to drive at the same time. It also has a cute feature where the angled shape of the selector means it tends to slip into a dead spot between functions where it does nothing. Want to get there faster? Push the jog selector in all the way. This activates a fast forward function. Only problem is, the fast selection it is so slow you’ll need time lapse photography to see it change. Since when are fast forward controls slower than the normal speed?
The unit was clearly faulty – the iPhone generally did not connect unless one pulled to the side of the road and turned the ignition off and on several times, but Alpine had no intention of doing anything about that. It was suggested that the bluetooth unit may have needed a software upgrade, but no help was forthcoming in doing this. The Alpine rep told the installer the problem was that I was too old to understand the unit!!!. This has been a terribly expensive exercise in frustration. In addition to expense, there has been the loss of days while the problems were debated and the unit removed and replaced with something that actually works (not another x305).
What I have learned from this is to be very careful to evaluate the performance of these items against your needs, and don’t be swayed by the ‘gee whiz’ reviews, often by people who have only assessed them in a showroom. Technological progress is not inevitable. Oh – and stay away from Alpine. There are some marvellous units out there that do a great job without the expense, and whose manufacturers are pleased to help.

Alpine IDA-X305
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this head unit mainly because I wanted to get away from carrying around CDs. During my research, I found this to be one the best units in terms of searching and sorting your MP3 via thumb drive or iPod/iPhone. Sound quality is great and good about of configuration and tweaking settings are available. Definitely a great buy for me, but of course if you are still looking to have one or two CDs around there are other units out there.

Fabulous!!!

I already had a very good Alpine stereo which had an iPod dock to it, but it was always so hard to search for specific songs, I just kept it on Playlists or general Random mode. But since I bought this new one, I just can’t get enough of different search modes. Apart from that, the facility to control it all is very intuitive, so it has been a GREAT buy… Worth every penny!!!
… And I’m even glader that I bought it just in time, since I checked just a few days later and it was out of stock!

Alpine Media Player is Top Notch
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This head unit maintains the highest quality that I have come to expect from Alpine.
Pros
Terrific sound quality with a strong 50 watts per channel.
Amazing display as sharp as your Iphone or Ipod that you are connecting to it.
Capability for future expansion, HD radio, Sat radio, blutooth.
Cons
Center dial feels kind of cheap for how important it is.
Need to buy an adapter to plug in an aux device besides the iphone or ipod.
Takes about 2 seconds to skip to the next song.

Not what I expected
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Well..
I have mixed feelings about this unit. It looks great on the dash and the red illumination almost matches the car’s. It works great with the ipod (it even displays art work!). But that’s it.
This unit lacks features found in most car stereos on this price range (and even lower). It does not have an equalizer. None, zip! Despite the beautiful screen, it does not offer a wide selection of wallpapers or screensavers. One of the features they advertise is “customizable wallpaper”. And they are right… you can download your own wallpaper to the unit. ONE! Don’t think you can add five or six wallpapers of your choosing.. no. You can only download ONE. What’s up with that?
Also, the plastic detachable face seems a little cheap, but maybe that’s just me.
But even more disappointing is the fact that it uses a proprietary cable to connect the ipod. That’s right! The white cable that comes with the ipods won’t work. Bad bad bad. And on their website they say it will work with other player using the mtp protocols. Well… I tried it with a Walkman X (it uses mtp) and it didn’t work. The unit recognizes a player, but no songs will play. (So I had to steal the wife’s ipod).
Anyway, I give it 3 stars because of the looks and the great ipod interface. But Alpine could have done soooooo much better.
P.S. If you need a replacemet of the usb cable, buy the KCU-440i

expected more from alpine

I bought this unit due to its usb funtionality, but unfortunately it’s kind of picky to read what you throw into the usb drive. Plugging an iphone is a breeze, not problems so far, it just suffers from some lag when skiping songs or browsing through the menus.
no remote included, which is a minor downfall, good sound quality.
There some reviews on the net claiming same usb reading issue as mine, and no fix available via firmware update.

Great for scrolling thru iPod, but that’s about it.
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Always been an Alpine fan, but they seem to be slacking off a bit lately. Still solid audio equipment, but features are beginning to fall into the subpar category. I chose this deck for the main reason of iPod scrolling, which other said this did well: it’s true, this deck scrolls thru my iPod faster than any other deck I’ve tested. Given that, I figured most other things would be “standard.” They’re not.
Cons I can’t stand:
- dial speed for volume is extremely slow. to go from loud to quite requires 3 full turns of the dial instead of one swift rotation
- still cannot find a standard mute feature w/o having bluetooth enabled
- dial is in a bad spot for viewing the screen while making adjustments
- clock “theme” is terrible and there is only one choice
- the interface as a whole feels cheaply made and plastic-like
- radio presets require you to enter a menu and scroll thru instead of hotkeys on the face of the deck
All-in-all, I got a wash for this deck. It achieved my main objective, but failed in other areas that I took for granted. I would not buy this deck again, but I will keep it for now as it does the job.

Ipod on the Go
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This unit makes your ipod sound great in the car. The screen is nice for seeing the artist and song that’s playing. I use it with an ipod touch. You can’t search for a song on the ipod when it’s plugged into the stereo. Also if you have a lot of songs, searching through them to find a particular one can take a while. It’s easy to get distracted when you’re looking through the menus. Keep your eyes on the road and just turn the shuffle on (or have a passenger find the song).

Very Nice Head Unit
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had the head unit for a couple of months now and I love it. It keeps my iPod charged and it’s very convenient to be able to navigate the iPod menu and the stereo level. I haven’t had a single problem with it yet and use it everyday.
There’s only two downfalls I’ve noticed so far. The first one is the obvious one of no CD player. It doesn’t bug me too much since my entire music library is on my iPod but you never know when a CD player may be wanted. The other problem is scrolling through the iPod menu. On the iPod, I can scroll through my library very quickly and efficiently. On this head unit, there’s no scrolling through the alphabet to get to songs or artists faster. There’s a certain technique of spinning the wheel that gets it to move faster through the list but it’s difficult to do consistantly (I could be an uncoordinated idiot).
But overall, a very good stereo.

iDA-X305
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I got this item to upgrade my headunit a pioneer DEH-p590IB. It was a wonderful upgrade, much clearer sounding and the controls were very good and didn’t feel cheap. Only issue i had was compatibility with my 4th gen ipod but it doesn’t state that it will work so that’s understandable. It works flawlessly with my 32gb iphone 3Gs which wasn’t listed either.

Don’t buy if you don’t have an Ipod
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
While I realize that this was designed with the iPod in mind, I bought this unit
for its ability to read music from a thumb drive (I don’t have an iPod). If you
like to listen to your music in the order of your list of files, this thing
works great. However, if you’re like me and wish to shuffle all of your music,
this thing works horribly.
When you use a thumb drive and activate the shuffle mode, it will only shuffle
the first 100-or-so files on the drive, and ignore EVERYTHING else. I checked,
and my file structure complies with what is specified in the manual (100
files/folder, 100 folders max). Calls to Alpine support are frustrating, and
that’s putting it nicely. Most calls result in a promise that it will be looked
into and that I’ll be called back the next day (calls are never returned). In
other calls, the rep claims that it’s a known issue, “and that’s just the way it
is”. UNACCEPTABLE!!!
Firmware bugs happen. Frequently. However, with the unit’s USB connectivity, I
see no reason that the engineers at Alpine wouldn’t leave some ability to update
or flash the firmware. The fact that they don’t want to fix this leads me to
believe that they didn’t design this capability into the unit. To me, this is
just crappy engineering (and yes, I’m an engineer).
I gave this unit two stars because it does sound and look great. Unfortunately
however, from this experience and seeing the technical expertise that Alpine
exemplifies, I’m steering away from them going forward.

Super with exceptions
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
1) I purchased this with the imprint module so this addresses the combo.
2) My intention was to use this with a WD 120GB hardrive which worked but in fits and spurts. The deal killer with using HD ultimately was the fact that the deck would not return to the last played song when turned off…it would with an 8Gb thumb drive but not with a HD.
3) I then purchased a new 120Gb iPod Classic which interfaced like a dream and I am able to quickly and (so far) reliably peruse 80Gbs of music with pure ease. I LOVE IT.
4) I play this through a 4 channel amplifier. Previously I had a Sony ES deck with a 4V pre-out which enhanced sound output/quality significantly over a 2V pre-out which was one of my key reasons for purchasing this Alpine impint module which claims to upgrade output from 2V to 4V…which I doubt after hearing the results, no where near the sound output I got from the 4V sony deck.
5) The imprint module…get it, but pass on the microphone/software conveniently not included. This PC software based automatic sound field “tuning” saves two preset “listening curves” which supposedly overcome the aucustical shortcomings of my Honda CRX. I was totallyy dissapointed with its results particularly in light of the fact that utilizing either of these two listening curves disables your ability to use the parametric or graphic equilizer options or the dynamic crossover tuning the imprint brings to this deck so its “it’s way” or the highway when using the software mediated tuning. After several meticulous software “measurements” all the “curves” created an akward sound where the front L speaker dominated the field. What I did then was to disable the curves. Then I manually adjusted the sound field tuning with a tape measure, measuring from all speakers to a single point between the front seats at the level of my ear when seated. Then I adjusted the crossovers to cut out the bass response below what my drivers are rated. Then I selected the graphic equalizer option, adjusted to my taste and then, I was astounded at the sound. This manual method produced a result which blew away the software based method. Simply the best sound I have ever had inside a car.
6) I like the clean faceplate void of many buttons I never use though the knob IS slow.
Hope this helps!

Killer car stereo for digital media
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After way too many hours reading reviews and ‘looking’ at available car stereos from Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer & JVC at the local stores, I finally decided to give up on everything I read and actually bring my thumb drive and iPod and actually try before buying. I am very glad I did!
The user interface on the ida-x305 is way beyond the best offerings of competing units. With this stereo I can actually search for radio stations, select and update station presets, scroll through folders on USB drives and browse the iPod touch/iPhone by artist, album, etc. – easily! There are no multi-key sequences needed, no multi-mode joystick like buttons. I’m kind of an old guy, so I’m not really in to technology just for the glitz. I have no patience for a fussy interface just to browse folders and select an mp3 or radio station – no matter how shiny the lights are. Changing songs, playlists or folders should not be a life-threatening exercise in staring and poking at the stereo while driving. It should also be usable by anyone else who borrows my car – without a 30 minute period of practice with some multi-mode, multi-key, miniature joystick that is darn near impossible to press dead center while driving.
The display does seem narrow, but when you see how the center control intuitively scrolls up and down menu lists and folders, it just works. Yes, the screen is too narrow to display typical album/artist/title info on a single line. These lines do scroll slowly during play to display all info available. This may bother some people, it doesn’t bother me. If I browse a folder or playlist, the data scrolls more quickly and makes selections easy.
I opted to add the Alpine KCE-400BT for bluetooth functionality. The external microphone works well, my phonebook is browseable directly on the stereo after the bluetooth phone connects (takes about 3 seconds to automatically sync), and caller ID is displayed on the radio for incoming calls. My first bluetooth call was to dear old Dad – that guy with the hearing aids. Instead of a quick “hello, can you hear me now?” test, we talked for 20 minutes without a single ‘what?’ or complaint about the way I sounded, no complaint about background noise – this while driving a Dodge diesel truck, air conditioner going at 3/4 fan speed, windows rolled up.
The sound quality is excellent, better than the factory installed Infinity sound system. I did replace the Infinity speakers with Rockford Fosgates as one of the original speakers had blown.
The best part is, I have no idea how good or bad the Alpine manuals are, as I haven’t had to read one!
