Kenwood Excelon KDC-x993 Radio
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Excellent customer service from the seller and Amazon. I was impressed with the quality of the web site and the integrity of the seller.

Amazing sound quality, good product but not without some flaws.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
For the pricepoint you will not find another head unit with as many options, toggles, tweaks or feature set. I debated for a long while with either Alpine, Clarion or Pioneer. I wasn’t disappointed with the KDC-X993.
The good: X’Over feature is amazing for optimizing speaker and amp frequency response. Built-in EQ offers good fine tuning for the last touches. Excellent expandability – I have both the mini-din Aux option, an iPod video hooked up and an iPhone 3GS able to stream Pandora via bluetooth. Coupled with CD and MP3 disc capability and your music options are endless. CD SNR reminded me why lossy/compression based files like mp3/wma can be such a disappointment sometimes.
The mixed: Bluetooth performance was great on a Blackberry Tour and Blackberry Curve. The stereo/A2DP performance of the iPhone 3GS can border “okay” to mediocre. There will be random skipping on the ipod function or Pandora. You can try placing the phone in various locations, it seems to affect reception quality. Again, this is a fault of the iPhone, not the receiver.
The bad: As you may have read, the UI of the receiver could have used a lot of help. The knob management is cumbersome at best. It takes some getting used to. There are some things that you won’t be able to do while driving. A thorough reading of the manual is also highly suggested as there are so many tweaks that can leave you amazed or disappointed with the head unit’s sound quality. They should have also added buttons for preset stations on the Radio function as well as an attenuate function on the head unit face. The remote is the only place there is an attenuate function.
Overall I was happy with the product. I haven’t had any glare issues other owners have talked about. Using the built-in amplifier, sound was superb. Using all external amps, it was awe-inspiring. I have the product paired with Polk Audio db6501 components and db651s coaxials (also purchased from amazon).

Kenwood KDC-X993
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I realy like this unit. To me it was easier to crash and burn through the features and use the book for reference at first. Once you understand how it works it is easy to use. Blue tooth is awesome and works great with my blackberry curve. I love the way the unit interfaces with the audio of the blackberry. I have yet to hook up the HD tuner. My only comment is that I cannot set up the date on the unit. I have not called the tech line to see if it is a malfuntion. Don’t realy care.

Fancy deck but does not deliver
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought this deck first part of 2010, as a late present to myself. I read LOTS of reviews saying this was an exceptional deck…well, I completely disagree. I have had many aftermarket decks in my vehicles, never anything very fancy, this was my first upgrade to a mid level choice. I am in the process of trying to return this deck as within two weeks the lights started flashing on and off on the faceplate anytime I used a control on the deck, like completely blank, not even legible in daylight or with a flashlight or anything. That was the icing on the cake, let me go back to beginning where although the ipod controls work ok, they are ridiculously confusing, anyone who doesnt want to spend a lot of time will never know the extent of how to manage ipod settings from the deck, instead they will simply unplug the ipod and switch menus like the old school decks defeating the purpouse of buying this so called ‘ipod deck’ in the first place. The FM reception is the worst I have ever experienced, who uses FM anymore? Well, I dont very often but when I do I want it to work, and yes the antennae was connected believe me. Also with the FM, there is no way to seek stations…meaning you have to know what station you are looking for and manually enter it via the remote control, dead serious. SO what happens when you are on a road trip somewhere you are not familiar with and want to listen to the radio? I have no clue. The bluetooth function was super cool…at first. This unit can play music through your bluetooth function of your iphone while you have an ipod connected and tucked away elsewhere, well, thats worthless as it cuts out…ALOT, so thats a pointless feature. As for the bluetooth microphone setup and placing calls through your speakers? That was super cool at first too, until I made my first couple phone calls. First time I got the “I can barely hear you” response no matter where I had the mic setup, so I set the ‘gain’ for the mic control up a notch, still the same, then up two notches, now it was WAY too loud for people on the other end. Though this deck had a lot of potential, in my opinion it did not perform at all to the way it was advertised, I hope I get my money back so I can move on to something else, not quite sure what yet, isnt this 2010? Shouldnt modern technology be able to make a good ipod deck?

Great sound but not perfect for an iPhone
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I wanted a receiver that would interface with my iPhone 3G seamlessly but it seems those types of receivers are few and far between, so after much deliberation I purchased Kenwood’s KDC-X993. After reading the manual a couple times to figure out how to work all the knobs and buttons, I was able to sync my iPhone with the bluetooth. The manual stated multiple iPhones could be synced but I could only get one to work with it, which was pretty annoying.
Also a headache is attempting to get the receiver to play music from the iPhone. Sometimes it works on the first try, other times I have to plug it in and then disconnect it and then plug it in again before it recognizes the iPhone.
I also had an issue with the iPhone and the bluetooth interface. I was receiving an “HF Disconnect” error that could only be corrected by resetting the receiver. I’ve had this problem a couple of times now.
Some things I like about the receiver include the sound and the color choices of the faceplate. The sound is amazing and the faceplate color choices are many so you can match it to almost any dash color there is.
Overall, I enjoyed the quality of the sound but there were too many aggravating things about this receiver to make it worth the money or effort.

Great Sound
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Ordered on Sunday night and enjoying music in my truck on Wednesday, thanks to Car Tunes fast delivery.
I upgraded from a Kenwood EZ-500 so installation was a snap, The reason I upgraded was for the Bluetooth.
My wife said this is the best she sould hear me when i’m on the road. The bluetooth side takes a little getting use to and a little trickey to set up.
As far as sound quality goes I’m not sure if KDC-X933 is any better than the EZ-500 but one thing is for sure the X933 is a lot easier to setup and fine tune when on the road.

Excellent Capability – TERRIBLE interface
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
WANTED:
I wanted something that does it all, has rotary knobs, and comes in a color that matches ‘BMW Amber’.
This radio is close (the amber is a very near miss). The sound is excellent the audio streaming is excellent and people can hear me better than when I’m using ‘just the phone’ in the car.
BUTTONS & KNOBS: – shy, but livable.
2 Knobs.. 1 for volume, 1 for ‘everything-else’.. the ‘everything else’ knob, turns.. and also has up, down left, right and center. Tricky to press when moving. You also have ‘src’,'fn’,and a tiny little ‘disconnect’ button for cellphone bluetooth.
There are no ‘quick access’ keys for radio station presets. A major omission.
USING THE THING….
The interface is the WORST I’ve seen, even when considering that nasty stuff pioneer puts out.
There are too many damned submenus, and the way they implemented the ‘everything knob’ (EK) works poorly.
Swapping between submenus or modes takes forever. They have these animations that look like crap and take several seconds. The unit itself is pretty fast but waiting for the transitions makes performing any action painful and frustrating.
RADIO:
When listening to the radio, one might expect to use the EK right and left taps as paging through presets up/down as going from FM1/FM2/AM and rotating the knob to do fine tuning… YOU GET NO FINE TUNING.. and the other clicks are strange ‘random’ things that make little to no sense.
A2DP (listening to music from my phone):
Right and left take you to different songs, but there is no pause, no fast-forward or rewind.. for ‘difficult’ things like that you have to bust out the phone/device and mess with it.. dangerous.. but how often does one want to pull over on a busy freeway?
PHONE – BLUETOOTH:
Phonebook
Totally effing useless. WORSE. They might have used the Theverything knob to make this something we could use but.. nope. You get to try to spell things out the hard way.
Caller-ID
Nope.. you don’t get to see who’s calling you.
Voicedial
Most phones come with voicedial, and there is a bluetooth protocol for that. But THERE IS NO VOICE DIAL BUTTON on this head-unit.. again you have to go to the phone for that. LAME!!
OVERALL:
I’m giving this unit 3 out of five only because it sounds great and COULD do everything very well if the people who thought up the software interface would get their heads out of the sand.
Excellent sound and hardware, extremely poor interface.

Kenwood KDC-X993
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have been using this head unit for a month now and I love it! The install was easy and the setup and controls are not as bad as some people have said. I use every feature that this stereo offers and all work very well, call quality on the bluetooth is absolutely wonderful the sound is great as well. The only thing I don’t like is the HF Disconnect messages after every call is ended, it fixes its self after a few seconds but still kind of annoying. I have had a few problems with the bluetooth audio not staying connected even when the phone is and calls still go through. I would have given this stereo a 5 star if the bluetooth audio where a little less flaky. all and all the best stereo I have had yet I would buy another one in a second.

Kenwood KDC-X993
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The overall quality of the product is very high, as one would expect when purchasing a flagship product. All product features are funtional, as expected, but several features are awkward to access, especially when driving. For instance, to change sound sources (i.e. to go from tuner to CD) a button press, followed by a knob rotation (which requires visual attention to the unit’s front panel) followed by a final extended button press is required. Definitely not something you want to be doing in heavy traffic. Programming in your favorite AM or FM stations is also an awkward and tedious process. The station genre feature can help make things a little easier, but most stations in my area do not broadcast the necessary RDS signal to make this feature work well for me. The iPod/iPhone USB connection works extremely well. Only one nit there is that the “random” song select feature always starts with the same song – whatever song is first alphabetically in your iPod/iPhone song library. After that, all subsequent songs selected by the “random” feature seem to be truly randomly selected. If you regularly use playlists, then you probably won’t ever notice this little glitch. The Bluetooth functionality is quite impressive. Hands-free calls with my iPhone were effortless and the sound clarity was amazing despite the road noise. Another nit here – the Bluetooth audio function is sometimes randomly selected for music playback by the unit even though the iPhone is directly connected via the iPod/iPhone USB cable. Not sure of the logic on this glitch, but it it easily corrected by disconnecting and then re-connecting the USB cable. My unit was delivered with BT firmware v1.7 which the latest available from the Kenwood support site. Good thing since flashing the firmware would require that I pull the unit out of the dash to perform the procedure, or use a Bluetooth-enabled laptop, which I do not own. I gave it 4 stars for all of the many features the unit provides and the enormous expandability possibilities. There are those few rough spots that I have already mentioned that keep it from being a 5.

Make sure your cell phone is compatable with this unit…!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Very impressed so far although am having a devil of a time with resolving the cell phone compatability issue. I suspect there are others like myself who simply thought if a radio is identified as Blue Tooth capable it would work with any blue tooth phone….WELL THAT’S A BIS MISTAKE TO DRAW THAT CONCLUSION…..BECAUSE THEY AREN’T. I’ve just found out the hard way…my phone isn’t on Kenwoods list as compatable…after wrestling with the unit for 2 weeks, thinking I’d done something wrong program wise….NOPE, you have to go to Kenwood’s web site to see if your phone is compatable. And if your current blue tooth phone isn’t, then you have to buy another one to make this thing work. That is so wrong….there should be some kind of notification on Kenwoods…or Pioneers boxes that clearly states BUYER BEWARE….first confirm you phone will work before buying this thing.
I’m one very unhappy camper!!!

Excellent Receiver
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I first started getting into car audio after a cassette melted in my Accent’s factory deck. I replaced it in 2007 with a Sony CDX-GT510 along with a direct connect iPod adapter. The interface of browsing and selecting songs off the iPod through the deck was tedious and extremely slow.
This receiver beats the heck out my previous Sony unit. The x993′s 5-line display is ideal for scrolling through my 6000+ iPod library. I can search by letter and skip by percentages. Since there are 5 lines of display, I view all the information for the song at once. With my old Sony deck (and most commonly) it was only a 14-digit display, which meant one would have to wait for the entire song, artist, album name to scroll across the screen. Not any more. The display’s custom color ability easily permits it to match with you car’s dash. And one of the most welcomed features is the x993 resumes the last song that was playing when the car turned off. My Sony deck would begin playing the first of song of the first artist in my library every time I turned the car on. This became extremely irritating when I would have to re-select a playlist, album, etc every time I had to turn the car off for various reasons (getting gas, going into store, etc.).
The blue-tooth has performed great with my Samsung Access. It displays my battery and signal. And has stopped me from worrying about a headset while driving. No tickets for me.
The rear USB and 3.5 mm port are great because it leaves the deck looking clean. I can just route the cables into my glove box for easy access.
The sound settings are extensive, and if you take the time to fine-tune them for your car, it pays off. I have dual 12 kicker comp subs with four 5.25 Kicker speakers (with the entire car dampened with damplifier pro). It all comes together well for my kiddy-car Accent.

feature ich and performance is awesome…its a little flakey
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Made a move from Alpine to Kenwood. For the money, you get a lotta features. If you use these properly, you can get some amazing audio quality. The bluetooth phone works well (I am using an iphone 3gs). 2 issues I have with this unit..
1) The unit syncs automatically with the phone for contacts when you get close to it, at the same time if its playing your ipod, it stops the music from the ipod, then syncs, and hangs (nevcer gets back to the ipod). I have to unplug the iphone and plug it back to resolve the issue.
2) The menu/user interface is not for the faint hearted
Overall I’m happy
