High Powered KENWOOD with USB and AUX ports
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This Kenwood USB/CD deck has been excellent. The install was a breeze since we already had a Kenwood CD player installed in the car…pretty much slide out the old, slide in the new deck and reconnect the wires.
The easiest way to play music is to connect a USB SD card reader or USB flash drive and then play the songs from there. You can load up different SD cards or do what I did…just color code a couple of 4GB USB drives with different music types. If you press and hold the eject button, you get “REMOVE” on the panel…that way when you connect the device again later it starts from where you left off listening.
I didn’t have any luck connecting an iPod with the USB port, but I’m sure I can connect it to the AUX 3.5″ input.
The sound is great…certainly not audiophile quality, but no MP3′s are that.

Not worth it.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I had many problems with this unit. First of all, iPod mode (controlling the music through the iPod itself instead of using the unit) is not available for the first generation nano or the touch – it doesn’t say this anywhere except in the user manual, which you can only see after you’ve already dropped the cash. The only reason I chose this model was for the iPod compatability. Controlling the iPod through the player was extremely difficult – if you pressed one button when you still had “search” mode on, the player would switch to radio, or sometimes even turn off. After a week or two of having the unit, buttons became even more unpredictable, doing completely random things. It would distract me while I was driving because I wasn’t able to do even the simplest things, like skipping to the next track, so I would just let it go, playing what I didn’t want to hear or not playing anything at all so I didn’t get into an accident messing with it. The display would sometimes suddenly scramble and not be able to do anything – I would have to turn the player off and restart it. Some days it just wouldn’t turn on in the cold and I’d have to wait until my drive home from work, when the car was warmed up, to use it. Then one day the entire unit shut down on it’s own and I was never able to start it again. I feel it’s reasonable to spend money on a unit and expect to hear music on it, which this unit just didn’t let me do. Let’s hope that it was just a single faulty unit that I was lucky enough to get. I returned it and went for a Sony instead, which has left me much happier!

Glitchy when connected to my Ipod
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I chose this model because of it can interface with my ipod. However after several days, I began to get various errors either when I did a search or plugged the ipod in. I tried the reset button, which would alleviate some of the problems, but they persisted. I finally took the unit back thinking it was a lemon and exchanged it for the same model. Well… it worked fine for a few days and now I’m back to the same old problems I was having before. I have even tried other ipods, thinking that it may be my ipod that was causing the problem. No dice. I’m going to bring it back yet again and exchange it for a different brand.

realistic sound
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I had a Kenwood reciever before, but it had a ribbon cable and the face reversed when off. The ribbon cable broke and my wife bought me a Pioneer sys. for my birthday. It never sounded the same. I bought this Kenwood reciever for myself for Christmas. My son is even mad at me. My bass is better than his. It sounds like your at a concert or club and the artist is right there.

Great receiver for the money.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
One thing keeps me from rating this 5 stars, and that is it’s inability to randomly play an entire USB flash drive if the music is organized by artist/folders. The only way to search gigabytes of music is to organize either by style, decade, artist, etc. To do this one must create folders on the drive, but once multiple folders are created, this receiver can not play all of your music randomly. It can only play what is in the selected folder randomly.
Beyond this this is a significant upgrade to my 1998 4runners factory stereo. My previously installed after-market speakers sound much better with this new receiver, telling me the factory unit was severely under-powered!
The aux input, which should have been included on every car stereo made since 1980, is a nice touch.
You can randomly play all your ipod music.
Decent looks, CD capability and satellite readiness make this a good buy.
I should note that the maximum number of songs in a folder is 255 so you cannot randomly play more than 255 of your songs. This is the biggest limitation of the unit. The maximum number of folders is 255.
Edit: I found an inexpensive fix for the random play issue. I purchased an external 60G USB harddrive from Xigmatek. Once formatted to FAT32, it works like a champ, and I now have a random folder with all my favorites, and all my other folders by artist/genre. Now I like my Kenwood even more.

Great, but with glitches
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Pro: Great sound. Great power. Nice features. USB port is awesome. Good receiver sensitivity.
Con: 1) Touching controls or faceplate can cause the unit to power down and then back up. Annoying.
2) Can’t read more than 200 songs in a single folder on an SD card.
3) Full random is only within a single folder, not all music on the media.
Overall a great unit, especially for the price.

Nice Car Radio
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We use this radio on our 43′ sailboat. The Aux port [we use it for a Zen MP3] and USB ports bring us entertainment when out of range of radio stations. And since I only like classical and opera often there is no entertainment to listen to. Anyhow the set of features and user setup programmability make this wonderful for our purpose. In fact I cannot imagine it being any better. The Sony we replaced was total sukko in comparison.

kenwood mp342u
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The radio works good. My wife is happy, so I am happy. The Amazon site said it fit my car, but it did not inform me of three products I would need to make installing it simpler. I ended up spending $61 more at Best Buy after 1 1/2 weeks for an antenna adapter, dash installation kit, and a wiring adapter kit. Unfortunately, I had already cut harness wires on the car, but did get them reconnected quickly. Kenwood technical help was about 30% efficient in providing accurate advice on wiring problems. I found some guidance on the internet, but it was not complet. The faceplate on the radio had problems, and they wanted me to send it in. I cleaned the contacts and put it back together and it now works great. All in all in took about 3 1/2 weeks to iron out all the problems. What a head ache. I recommended to Amazon that they should list other “needed” items to properly install items such as this on their website. April from Amazon said she would pass that along. Buy it, but beware there are other items to help you greatly with installation

Excellent product for the price

I had no difficulty installing this receiver, even with the satellite radio hook up. It works perfectly and is very easy to operate, once you get used to which button does what.
